Zones of Regulation
At Bishop William Ward Primary School, we are committed to supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing as part of our wider provision for personal development. We use the Zones of Regulation as a whole-school approach to help children understand and manage their emotions effectively.
The Zones of Regulation is a structured, colour-coded framework that supports children in recognising their feelings, understanding how these affect their behaviour and developing strategies to regulate themselves successfully. It provides a consistent language for discussing emotions and enables pupils to become more aware of how they feel and how they can manage those emotions.
Emotions are grouped into four zones:
- Blue Zone – tired, sad, unwell, low in energy
- Green Zone – calm, focused, ready to learn
- Yellow Zone – worried, excited, frustrated, unsettled
- Red Zone – strong emotions such as anger or distress, feeling out of control
Pupils are taught that all zones are normal and that everyone moves between them at different times. We help them to regulate their emotions by encouraging them to take time to pause and reflect. To use calming movements, seek support from an adult and to make choices that help them return to a state where they are ready to learn.
We encourage families to use the same language at home to support consistency and help children apply these strategies in different contexts.
